Company
profile and short description
GECOsistema is a startup consulting company founded in september 2001 with the
aim of turning advanced research level expertise in the field
of environmental and geographic decision support systems into
an affordable consulting service which can be exploited in
many real world decision making processes.
There
are many fields in which modeling and decision support systems
allow to achieve optimal costs and effectiveness of decisions.
Typical
examples are:
o civil
protection: hydraulic risk, wildfires risk, industrial risk
o
Air
Dispersion Modeling
o
water
resource management at the catchment scale
o
hydraulic
networks modeling
o
Landfills,
contaminated sites and Human Health Risk Assessment
o environmental impact
studies (EIS)
o remote
sensing and image processing
- civil protection: hydraulic risk, wildfires risk, industrial
risk
GECOsistema masters simulation models which allow realistic representation
of the dynamics of phenomena such as
1.
catchment hydrology, river floods, dam break (HEC-RAS,
HEC-HMS, FLDWAV-DAMBRK)
2.
forest fires (FARSITE, BEHAVE)
3.
industrial accidents such as explosions, fires and toxic
substance releases (SIRIO, DEGADIS, ...)
TOP
GECOsistema has specific expertise in modeling pollutants emitted
from several sources (industrial point, area source and traffic
linear) using ISC3 (Short and Long Term), AERMOD, CALPUFF,
CALMET , CAMx,
CALINE4. These tools are essential to perform environmental
impact studies for several projects, such as power plants,
incinerators, new roads, waste management plants.
TOP
- water resource management at the catchment scale
GECOsistema
uses models such as TOPMODEL, SWAT and the BASINS toolbox
to describe catchment scale water budgets and to evaluate
the availability of water for different uses (e.g. feasibility
studies for hydropower production, drinking water supply,
irrigation...).
In
addition, GECOsistema has a strong expertise in numerical
modeling of groundwater flow, using such tools as MODFLOW,
VS2DT, VS2DH and WhAEM, through which studies related to the
use and protection of aquifer reservoirs can be performed.
GECOsistema
performs feasibility studies and design support in the field
of water resources saving and recycling, small storage reservoirs,
control of hydrologic effects of land use transformation.
TOP
- hydraulic networks modeling
GECosistema
performs gas and water distribution, sewage and stormwater
networks analysis using state-of-the-art models (such as SWMM,
EPANET and software designed on purpose within the ArcView
GIS package) in order to evaluate existing or designed hydraulic
network schemes. GECOsistema also performs plans and design
support for the development of such hydraulic systems.
TOP
- Landfills, contaminated sites and Human Health Risk Assessment
GECOsistema has a specific expertise in modeling landfill hydrology
using HELP and similar tools, and flow and transport in soil
and groundwater (HSSM, VLEACH, MODFLOW, MT3D, etc.). these
tools may be of great help in the design of contaminated sites
and landfill remediation, in the evaluation of natural attenuation
of pollutants in soil and groundwater, and in landfill and
contaminated site management decisions.
GECOsistema performs quantitative assessment of human health risk
using standard porcedures such as RBCA, CalTOx,
Giuditta, HWIR and 3MRA (specific
for air emission sources).
TOP
- environmental impact studies (EIS)
GECOsistema
is a leader expert in environmental modeling for EIS :
-
environmental impact assessment
-
Integrated Pollution Prevention Control (IPPC)
-
air dispersion of pollutants using such models as CamX,
CalPuff, ISC3 and CALINE 4
-
surface water quality modeling using WASP 6.0 and QUAL2E
-
groundwater and soil pollution (VLEACH, HSSM,
MODFLOW+MT3D etc.)
TOP
- remote sensing and image processing
GECOsistema develops image processing algorithms for automatic extraction
of environmental features such as river network, coastline,
roads, urban areas, clouds and their shadows. The use of satellite
images it’s a power tool useful in several analysis such as
land use change, erosion monitoring, environmental impact
assessment, water quality and flooded and burned area assessment.
GECOsistema uses advanced GIS and mathematical modeling tools, multicriteria
analysis, geostatistics, image processing and cellular automata
for the purpose of providing optimal data exploitation and
cost-effective solutions to most environmental decision makers.
Thanks
to its light structure and minimum fixed costs, GECosistema
allows the possiblity to use advanced analysis tools in an
affordable way so to increase cost-effectiveness of most decisions
in the above mentioned fields.
Many
modeling services can be offered through www as a support
to local designers, planners and decision makers. For further
details contact home@gecosistema.it.
